★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tenryu-ji hosts a serene and beautiful Shojin Ryori at #shigetsu , a Bib Gourmand Restaurant on the temple grounds. From the mellow menu my favorites were the gomadofu (chilled sesame tofu), miso-glazed eggplant, yuba (tofu skin) in a clear broth. A couple of the dishes had wasabi with a kick to fire up some flavors. It’s a beautiful experience in such a peaceful atmosphere and one of the mustDos in Kyoto !

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Travelling solo as a vegetarian and found this Michelin guide vegan restaurant. You could book through their website. As this week is the Golden week (28 April to 6 May), it might be the reason why some days are fully booked.
Standard menu for me at 3,000 Yen for one person. Comes with hot Japanese tea and you could add on sake or beer. Delicate in the variety of flavors in pickled vegetables, soy and root vegetables.
You would need to pay additional 500 Yen to get into the Tenruji temple gardens before you can access the restaurant in an obscure corner next to the main hall and the pond. Pleasant experience. You can pay another 300 Yen to see the world heritage site Tenruji temple’s signature dragon painting (which I did not view). Exit the garden at the north gate to have quick access to the bamboo grove.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing vegan food in a zen setting. You will have to pay ¥500 to enter the garden but it is a beautiful place and sets the scene for your culinary experience. Reservations required if you want to book a specific meal. Otherwise there is only one meal on offer that day for walk in diners.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wonderful, excellent, unique experience!!! I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. Super friendly services. Food were so tasty. They brought vegetarian foods to a new level. We booked the cheapest combo, still taste amazing and we still got enough portion.
Tips: It’s located in a temple, and you have to pay for entry tickets.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really enjoyed the set meal here on a Friday lunch time. We hadn't reserved but it wasn't a problem as there were only a few other tables occupied. When we walked in we were slightly confused as there were no staff and it wasn't clear where to go - eventually we found the bell to ring on the desk to call a waiter over! No choice at lunch time other than the ¥3300 set meal, which was fine by me. It was seven small dishes, plus rice, melon and green tea. I wasn't sure about what a quarter of it was - there's some unusual flavours and textures that I'd not had before - but it was all delicious. It's on the pricey side at ¥3300, plus another ¥500 to enter the temple grounds, but I thought it was worth it for the interesting food and unique experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This was an amazing experience. Very relaxing and meditate. And everything we had was delicious. I loved the ambiance and the simple decor of the restaurant and the service was superb. It’s ¥3300 for the cheapest course menu that is super filling, and ¥500 for the entrance fee to the garden.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely fantastic dining experience. We booked two ¥5,500 lunch sets and were assigned to enjoy our lunch in the smaller house, private room. The food was great even for non vegetarian, and the view was simply stunning. Highly recommend!
