Before coming to Japan, many people would ask why Tofu can become a main theme of a restaurant. Tofu dishes can be understood as a light but tasty, simple but fulfilling, mind-purifying and refreshing. All these can only be understood when people come in person. The landscape, the restaurant premise, and the food are a package of this excellent dining experience.

This was one of the best experiences I had in Kyoto. We started the day dressing in traditional clothing (Yukata and Kimono) and walked around Tenryu-ji and Arashiyama bamboo forest. Keeping with the spirit, I wanted to have a traditional dining experience. Thankfully I found Yudofu Sagano while wandering the neighborhood. As you enter the restaurant the friendly host will give you the option of either dining on tables or tatami; I highly recommend the tatami experience. You will be escorted through the garden and into a tatami mat room overlooking it. This restaurant offers a tofu kaiseki course including boiled tofu in kombu, tempura, and various tofu based side dishes. The taste of each dish was both delicate but intricate. For example the boiled tofu dish came with a ponzu dipping sauce to dip in adding both a nice citrus bite and helping cool down the tofu. The soft boiled egg in soy sauce was really delicate but creamy and perfectly cooked. The quantity and pacing of the meal was perfect for a mid afternoon lunch after exploring the area. I would definitely come back!

We were staying one night in Arashiyama and it’s not easy to find dinner places. Finally we head to this amazing restaurant from Google search. They provide one single menu but it tastes better than the tofu course I had in Kyoto. Service is great, staff can speak English. And the garden view is amazing! My mum enjoyed a lot. The entree onsen egg, tempura and of course the different tofu cuisine all taste great. The set costs us 3800 yen each and one warm sake in 700 yen. Would definitely recommend to friends!

Firstly for the non-initiated, "yu dofu" means "water tofu"- that is, plain tofu boiling in plain water. For us, that's not the most exciting taste really. That's the main culinary show here, plus some side dishes that weren't particularly mind blowing. In the tofu/ vegetarian category of Japanese food, I've had much better. What is amazing here particularly is the atmosphere. The old house, garden and setting is exquisite.

This is a tofu ryouri restaurant! It is so light a meal and very subtle and tasty. Great experience and atmosphere too. It is not all vegetarian though. We sat at the counter which feels like a museum. There is a building in the back with tatami rooms too. And in nice weather they open the sash doors and all the outside tables are available too. Super silky smooth 湯豆腐 (Boiled Tofu), compliments with a sumptuous variety of small dishes, especially the sesame tofu and kuzu jelly. Note: This tofu cuisine is not for everyone taste as it is extremely light in taste, only suitable for tofu lovers, or else you will be left disappointed.

I'd travel the world to taste this set menu. Beautifully done. All the little details and great service. The place is located on a quiet street, away from the tourist flooded areas. Pass the little doorway you'll be greeted by a beautiful Japanese garden, choice of western style or traditional Japanese seating. There is only one course menu, started off with various little dishes, (gorgeous soft boiled egg) something to nibble on while waiting for the tofu pot to cook. Then comes the tempura (all veggie) and rice and some pickles. lastly something sweet tofu with a drop of jam. Make sure to try their home made sake. Overall - highly recommended!

I love everything about the food and the ambience of the restaurant! As an avid fan of tofu, the meal set was unforgettable, to be honest. The food tasted superb and very pretty. The dessert was my favorite part, how could they make it so good?
