★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really great find in Kyoto, off the main tourist route in Gion, with great drinks, awesome food and a welcoming and friendly atmosphere! The owner does the cooking behind the bar like a traditional Izakaya but the whole place feels like a fresher, more modern twist on the traditional approach, compared to what I've seen elsewhere in Japan. We visited on the first night of our second trip to Kyoto and will be going back before we leave!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 1 star is for the place because the only good thing about this restaurant is actually the place itself.
- The staff are sloppy. Cookers wear mask on their chin. One sneezed and barely turned his face to avoid sputter on the food. He also wiped his nose with the back of his hand and went back to cooking. The other one picked some food with his finger and put some directly on his mouth before sending the plate to the microwave (no glove for sure). They laughed with each other, talks very close to the food without the mask covering neither the nose or the mouth. No hygiene at all!
- The food was bad. Cold beef with no taste, a mix of unrecognisable meat with mushy nuts and a horrible gin fizz even worse than anyone from a convenience store.
- No manager to supervise the hygiene.
You can be cool and pretend to be rebel, but a minimum of hygiene is the rule.
Covid says kanpai !

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great ambience, positive vibes all around, with customers on the counter having fun talking to one another. The food was fantastic. The firefly squid were a blast of a flavour, and the short ribs juicy and smokey. Leo the owner’s fun, and even made us steak, which was not on the menu that night. We also enjoyed the large selection of whiskies and had quite a few as highballs.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great energy inside with a warm and welcoming team. We were so happy to find this Izakaya. Good music, good food & drink, good people + a dog. There was light cigarette smoke from a few patrons however not as Smokey as many places encountered in Japan.
The kitchen is in the middle with the bar around it making for fun to watch. Approx 10 or so bar sears plus tables around the sides. Had one of my favorite Japanese whiskies from Chiyo!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I took a leap of faith going here and I do not regret it. The workers were so friendly and the food is just amazing! So the specialty is smoked food. Unfortunately the menu is handwritten, which makes it difficult to read when your Japanese is still on the elementary to intermediate side, and there are no English options but, I was able to talk to the chef and he recommended stuff to me. They even have smoked versions of chocolate and gateau chocolat on the dessert section of the menu. I tried the smoked gateau chocolat and it's quite surprising. The smokeyness isn't very prominent and it's a mild aftertaste that accentuates the chocolate flavour.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I went to dinner with my family and we loved it. Very pleasant and laxly friendly team, you can feel that they run the Rutobo with passion and a lot of joy. This is reflected in the great selection of the sensational food. the smoker and their dishes are fantastic, as soon as you enter the restaurant you can smell the smoker's good smell, great! it is playing cozy jazz. Thank you very much, I can only recommend you warmly

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great dinner experience sitting at the counter. This place fills up on the weekends, but you can make a reservation if you need one. We were so glad to finally eat here since on our first visit they were full.
They did not have an English menu, and the menu is handwritten so it didn’t translate well on Google translate- but we figured it out.
All of the smoked dishes were great- especially the chicken wings. There was a fried oyster dish on the daily specials board that was phenomenal. The roast beef was also great! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu and a cold draft Sapporo beer.
