なぜ三河国の曹洞宗寺院妙厳寺の鎮守神荼枳尼天が建仁寺の塔頭寺院に祀られているかといえば、江戸時代の初期に建仁寺を中興した三江紹益禅(1572~1650)の父母が豊川稲荷を篤く信仰し、豊川稲荷に祈念することで三江紹益禅師が産まれたことによるらしい。
ただの鎮守社を超えて信仰を集めているようで、興雲庵の山門よりも立派な稲荷社のための楼門が寺の北側に建っている。
