★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Best meal we have had in Japan. Everything was subtly perfect yet surprisingly amazing. The chefs and ambiance were top notch. Very unamsuming due to tourist location but this place is a gem. 9 course meal for a great price!! We would have paid double!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The winter dinner course kaiseiki meal was out of this world. Every dish complemented each other. The staff speak English and helped to explain each dish and everytime went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our dinner experience. I was truly amazed by the culture of the waitress and chef who both took a long bow upon us exiting the restaurant which I believe symbolizes the respect to customers in the Japanese way of life. It was humbling to see that culture still prevails in this time of the world. An experience that cannot be missed while in Kyoto, highly recommended and will definitely return the next time I'm in Kyoto.

Menu is 8 course
Appetiser: asparagus wrapped in an egg layer, water shield, prawns
Japanese soup : sea bass, spinach and yuzu citrus
Sashimi of pike conger
Mochi rice topped with sweet corn
Grilled fish and assorted dish
Mushimono : eggplant, boiled conger (eel) beans
Gohan: hearth cooked rice
Dessert : jelly from milk, red beans and fruit
Good pace for the service speed, and atmosphere is quiet. My two girls managed to enjoy all the items.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ First kaiseki for wife & I so were intimidated but the team of 5-chefs at Gion Karyo made it a very relaxing & unforgettable moment for us. They made my honeymoon very very special.
Just the 2 of us at lunch (virus probably caused that) and Gion Karyo prepared the 9-course meal masterfully. I'd say 4 were extremely good, 5 were good. But everything was super fresh. Served beautifully.
The chefs were super friendly, accommodating, explained clearly how to eat the elaborate dishes. Exchanged a bit of chat with us without being overbearing. The service was just outstanding.
The place itself is intimate & calming, with a small garden at the back. Overall an unforgettable experience. Thank you Gion Karyo!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I visited Japan for 2 weeks, and extensively planned all my meals. I was attracted to this restaurant because of the relatively high Google ranking and inexpensive Kaiseki meal. I waited until I finished my whole trip to write this comment. I appreciated the shop's location, and service. I think the owner tried hard to impress its patrons. However, I think the lunch was only of a fair deal and lacking some 'Wow' moments. With this price, you could get some very nice sushi from other well known shops. If you just want to experience Kaiseki on budget, this could be the place, otherwise, keep looking.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ For $150/person - everything was shockingly bad: especially the service and food.
We arrived a few minutes before our reservation started and there was no one to greet us. The pacing of the meal was both slow and fast, the next course not coming for a while or two dishes coming at the same time. We had 4(?) Different waiters throughout the 2 hour meal. Our main waitress was rushing so much that she just pointed at the menu without explaining any of the dishes. At one point she ran away with a full dish without even asking if we were done.
I'll ignore poor service if the food is good. Unfortunately all of the dishes had little to no flavour, sashimi was chewy and fishy, matcha ice cream had bits of ice in it. Even the plating was poorly executed.
Finally there was no attention to detail. We got mismatching drink glasses for the same drink, one of the dishes was served on a plastic plate, and they couldn't even be bothered to provide chopstick rests.
Highly recommend against it wasting your money here.
