★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 方丈 - 重要文化財。長享元年（1487年）の建立で、もと安芸国の安国寺にあり、安国寺恵瓊が慶長4年（1599年）に建仁寺に移築したもの。東側に設けられた大玄関を介して本坊と連結する。創建当初は杮葺であったが、元文元年（1736年）に瓦葺きに改められた。建物の外周すべてに建具が入り、壁が少ない構造のためか、1934年（昭和9年）の室戸台風で倒壊し、1940年（昭和15年）に創建当初の杮葺で復旧された。その後1962年（昭和37年）に銅板葺きに改められていたが、2013年（平成25年）に杮葺に復した。各室には桃山時代の画壇を代表する画家の一人である海北友松の水墨障壁画があったが、現在は襖から掛軸に改装され、京都国立博物館に寄託されている。台風被害の復旧後は、日本画家橋本関雪による障壁画『生生流転』（しょうじょうるてん）『伯楽』『深秋』『蕭條』『松韻（寒山子）』（計60面、1940年完成）が設置されている。
Hojo-Important Cultural Property. Built in the first year of Chokyo (1487), it was originally located in Ankokuji Temple in Aki Province, and was relocated to Kenninji Temple in 1599 by Ankokuji Ekei. It is connected to Hombo through the large entrance on the east side. It was a thatched roof when it was first built, but it was changed to thatched roof in the first year of the Genbun (1736). It collapsed due to the Muroto typhoon in 1934 (Showa 9), probably because of the structure with few walls and fittings on the entire outer circumference of the building, and was restored with the original wood shingle in 1940 (Showa 15). After that, it was changed to thatched copper plate in 1962 (Showa 37), but it was restored to thatched roof in 2013 (Heisei 25). In each room, there was an ink painting by Kaihoku Tomomatsu, one of the representative painters of the Momoyama period, but now it has been renovated from a sliding door to a hanging scroll and deposited at the Kyoto National Museum. After the recovery from the typhoon damage, the barrier paintings by Japanese-style painter Hashimoto Kansetsu, "Shojoruten", "Bo Le", "Midaki", "Shojo", and "Matsurin (Kanshanko)" (60 pages in total, completed in 1940) is set up.

仏間に安置されているのは東福門院寄進の十一面観音坐像だそうです。
