One of the few places where you can taste the traditional Kaiseki meal at an affordable price. Try to put down your name in the reservation list early (around 10-10:30) to get a table quickly. Otherwise, you may have to wait upwards of 1.5 hours. The restaurant has limited seating, which increases the queue. The food is tasty, and is mainly fish-based. You can ask for extra helpings of rice. Try to get a seating on the ground floor for a look at the chefs' methods, or on the 1st floor for street view. The setting is intimate and personal, and service is excellent.

Pros: lunch price (around 2000yen per person), free rice refill (though one bowl is filling enough), not touristy with lots of locals Cons: portion size (5 slices of fish for the sashimi set), rice was just ok to our Malaysian palate (we are used to rice being fragrant and with a larger grain) - it was just stickier than normal Japanese rice but taste the same to us. Getting in was an adventure in itself. First day we put our name in at 10.30am. came back at 10.50 to queue. Didn't make it in the first batch so we left to get snacks. At 11.15am the guy was already out and our name were already crossed out. So we came back the second day. 10am to enter our name. Back at 10.50am to queue. We stood outside the sidewalk with a line of people until 11.40am before being let inside. Definitely not worth the trouble for subpar food. Clearly the locals are able to appreciate their famous rice since they are happy to wait.

Long line but rewarding. Top notch service, great rice quality cooked in donabe pots (Japanese traditional way). The bottom crusts came with second helping. Like senbei but better. Set menu at lunch were reasonably priced and delicious. Their Tokyo location also has long waits. Narita airport is the only one I observed without wait.

30 min wait in the line but wasn’t too bad. It was a sunny day in Kyoto and they gave us Geisha style Umbrellas. They lady that was managing the line was so respectful and impeccable service, 5 star hotel service. The food was was surprising from the first bite. You feel like you’re being offered a bit of Kyoto culture through their food. I got a set that had a bit of everything roughly 2300 yen.

Quite a long wait if you get there after 11 but worth the wait if you enjoy rice. The main dish here is the amazing rice (with the crispy bottom rice) the side dishes aren't bad either and go really well together with the rice. English menu provided.

This traditional restaurant, is just opposite the Yasaka Shrine. A long queue before the shop opened for business. To save time, menus were handed out and with orders taken. Very efficient way! Beautiful interior decor and I was fortunate to be seated at the first floor...with the best view, facing the road and Yasaka Shrine. My food was delicious, fantastic and definitely worth all the effort and wait! A big thumps UP to the set esp the crusty, aromatic rice and surprisingly, all at a very affordable pricing too. Loved this food experience.

Unless you can eat 2 bowls of rice, and a rice lover, else lunch is not for you. We make lunch booking weeks in advance. Arrived 10:50am, ordered and got in at opening time 11am. My sashimi set came fast (everything was prepared in advance). The presentation of the lunch set was nicely done. The sashimi portion was rather small but was good. The highlight is the rice. You must finish the first bowl before you get a lightly charred piece of rice on your second bowl! The slightly burnt rice give off a nice aroma and this is the highlight of the whole meal. We finished up fast let those who do not reserve have a chance. I rated 3 star not because the food is poor, but it's more hype than anything else. It's definitely not worth the effort to booked or wait in the long line

Quite a long wait. Had to wait for 3 hours to get in but really wanted to try the traditional Japanese Teishoku and it was definitely worth the wait. The place can hold about max 6-7 at a time and hence the long wait and all of them are counter seats and you see how the cooks are working in front of you. There was pin drop silence in the place and you only hear the movement of the cooks behind the counter. Overall loved the food there and they give a serving of burnt/crispy rice from the bottom of the cook pot which was a nice touch to the meal. Definitely would suggest to try this lam E at least once to experience a nice Teishoku with a calm atmosphere.
