I lived in Kyoto for 3 months and ate out almost everyday so I know the comparison very well. Edit on 7/22/19: One year after my review and three years after the original experience, what remains as the most unpleasant and traumatic part is not the price, but hearing an f-word curse in return for asking for an itemized receipt. And that from someone whose English vocabulary was limited at best. I must have eaten out in Japan at least 500 times, most of them in Kyoto. Vast majority had been wonderful, the rest were good to great which makes this particular experience all the more surprising and not representative of Japanese people and their culture.
