★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Clearly there were available seats, but they just wouldn't let us in. Not sure why. I would prefer to spend my money elsewhere.
*EDIT: After returning (it's really close to where we're staying), this time they let us in, and I wish they hadn't... Mediocre food and not very clean (which is very unusual for Japan). At least they were nice this time... Probably there are better places in the area.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Good food but they definitely racist. Husband and I went when it first opened and we got the crappy table. The guy at the front had to ask the head chef if it was okay to let us in. Witnessed 3 groups of Chinese coming in being told there was no seats available. One group was persistent and kept inquiring about empty tables and bar seats. The head chef said no they are reserved and when they asked about the next day they said it was fully reserved tomorrow also. Was interesting witnessing this. Although I was lucky to have gotten in and the food was good, I didn’t feel comfortable being there. Felt unwelcome and rushed. Weird when we were leaving... the head chef came out and bowed three times to us. I think they may have possibly mistaken my husband for someone famous! Glad we were able to get in since we wanted to eat there but hope that head chef gets a taste of his own medicine when going to a foreign country!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great informal, lively little restaurant. There is an English menu (somewhere) and everyone is friendly and welcoming! Be careful of drinking Sake with the locals.. this gets served in tumblers and the headache the next day is guaranteed! I had a great time here, the Karage was a safe option and simply delicious!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Izakaya with lots of energy and vigor. Just watching the crew work is able to give us the vibes. English menu is available with the relevant items, less the specials.
Less one star for the stuffy air.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ So much fun, a very lively place. I feel like a part of the culture here with everyone so friendly. The staff is always smiling and attentive to our needs. The Ika Yaki Grilled Squid is good but sold out very fast. It opens till late which is rare in Kyoto.
