Daihikaku Senkou-ji in Arashiyama is not one of those grand temples where you feel dwarfed by the buildings and awed by the treasures, you feel dwarfed by the surrounding mountains and awed by the view. And why would you want to pay ¥400 entrance fee for a temple that’s neither UNESCO, nor really that famous? Because, after you walk that 1 km from Togetsu-kyo bridge along the river, past the Tonase Waterfall, and then proceed to climb the stairs (reading along the way quotes and Zen wisdom), you end up wanting to pay. And not only because receives no money other than donations. At the top you can sit, relax, enjoy the breeze and borrow some binoculars.

When visit Ariyama, you must spend your time and your energy to visit this place. It take only 20 minutea from the bridge and thebwalk path is very beautiful. When you reach the temple on the mountain, there will be the anwser why you have to be here.

Great temple slightly off of the beaten path past the Katsura River Bridge, continue to follow the paved path west past the monkey zoo and you will eventually find it. Climb up the stairs and you will find the temple perched on top of the mountain with a great view of Kyoto. 400 yen entrance donation requested for entry. Non-crowded, very friendly temple monks, and if you're lucky, you'll find Sumide there, the resident Shiba Inu dog.

Truly a hidden gem. Arashiyama itself is an extremely touristy site, but once you head towards this temple, you start to gradually sense how Arashiyama was like in the old times.

Wonderful place to be. Tranquil with fresh air. Peaceful. Love the ShiBa dog. My wife loved the place so much that we made a return trip to this place within our 8-day stay in Kyoto.

Amazing walk in autumn along the gorge and then a medium hard climb up to this small Zen Buddhism outpost. Stunning views across and along the gorge. Can also see Kyoto across the way. Well worth the effort to reach this serene spot. Escaping the crowds is also a big bonus. Costs 400 yen when you reach the temple. Well worth it.

During this year's autumn season, I went to Arashiyama and decided to walk along the Katsura River. This time though, I decided to walk along the left side of the river towards the Daihikaku Senkō-ji Zen temple. It's about a one-kilometre stroll along the river bank and then a slightly steep climb to the temple. There is a splendid view from the balcony of the main hall. Not so many people were there, and inside the temple grounds, there are serene spots to relax and enjoy.
