★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 琵琶湖疏水の蹴上船溜から南禅寺船溜までの約36ｍの高低差を利用し、日本初の事業用水力発電所として1891年（明治24年）に建設されたのが蹴上発電所である。生み出された電気は蹴上インクラインの動力源となるとともに、日本初の営業用電車を走らせた。現在も最大4,500kWの発電を行っており、取水口から取り込まれた水は導水管を通って発電所に送られている。取水口の手前には流量を調整するために長い洗堰が設けられており、水が滑るように流れ落ちる様を眺めることができる。
