★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nothing special about this Japanese garden compared to the others in Kyoto, and the walking path is limited. The grounds outside nearby Nanzenji are more impressive (not to mention free to enter).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Although most people go there for the fall colors, I visited during the spring of 2018. It was a rainy day, but that only added to the marvelous atmosphere of this place. And there hardly any other visitors in the late afternoon. The Nanzenji complex has many places to visit, but I really recommend Tenju-an Temple. The two ponds, in particular, are beautifully landscaped, with stone lanterns, lily pads and moss all adding to the beauty. The raked sand rock garden is also notable, but the lush landscape around the ponds is the main attraction for me. The temple has a very interesting history - it's the burial place of one of Japan's "
"great unifiers" named Hosokawa Fujitaka - but I didn't have time to tour the building itself.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Tenjuan garden is so beautiful! Well worth the small fee of less than ¥500 to enter. We visited during a rainy day, but the garden and views were still so calming. The koi in the pond are very curious and friendly, they followed us as we walked around their lake.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The red leaf is great. You can sit here and enjoy beautiful red leafs. This place is not as crowded as other gardens in the area. Very peaceful and relaxing. The only thing that holds me from giving a five star is the area is rather small. You can finish the whole area within 10-15 minutes. However if you want to take beautiful pictures and enjoy the atmosphere, you can spend 40-60 min.
However the view is amazing. Super amazing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Perhaps the most beautiful garden I've seen in Japan . The Tenjuan Garden is absolutely gorgeous, with beautiful plants and a pond with tons of Japanese carps that are very eager to come near. If you are into photography, you may end up spending a few hours here.
