鎌倉幕府の公文書である「吾妻鏡」の中では、「吾朝無双」と称えられるほど万宝を尽くして造られた建物だったそうです。
本尊は、雲慶作の丈六の薬師如来。
毛越寺の中心的な堂で、東西に廊が出て南に折れ、その先端には鐘楼、経楼がありました。
嘉禄二年（1226）、火災で消失したとのことです。
毛越寺は失われた建物が多いのも特徴で、失われたこと自体は残念ですが、歴史ある史跡であればある種それもまた当然、といった気にもなるので、想像力を掻き立ててくれる存在でもあります。
