★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 「吾妻鏡」によると二代藤原基衡公が工を始め三代藤原秀衡公が完成させた御堂で、その前身は慈覚大師開山まで遡り、寺名は開山時の年号に由来します。

建物の規模は、正面7間約27.9m、側面6間約22.51mで左右に廊があり、金堂円隆寺とほぼ同じだそうです。
