The Statue of Kogoro Katsura - Kyoto

維新の三傑？ちゃんちゃらおかしいわ。べき論と批判・文句ばかりで、自分では何一つ行動しない。やったことと言えば、賄賂や公金使い込みの長州のクズ仲間を救済することに注力しただけ。まさに『勝てば官軍』を地でいく男。

明治の偉大な立役者桂小五郎、池田屋事件ではここから南に250メートル行ったところにある池田屋に同席していたものの異変を察知し屋根伝いに逃げて、ここ長州藩に入ったとのこと、もし彼に何かあったらその後の歴史が大きく変わったのではと思う。

通りがかりに発見しました。 銅像です。

烏丸通側にあります。いい感じのイケメン像だと思います。尚長州藩邸跡石碑は御池通側にあります。

ホテルの入口近くにあります。 あるのは銅像と説明文だけですね。

旧長州藩邸があった場所です。近くには当時の愛人で後に夫人となる芸者幾松さんがいた潜伏先の料亭幾松が今も元気に営業されています。

説明版： 桂小五郎の像 明治維新を成し遂げ、近代日本の礎を築いた桂小五郎（木戸孝允　1833-1877）は長州藩士、吉田松陰の門下生。 長州藩邸跡の当初にその像を建立し、事績を検証する。 （現地説明版より） 長州藩邸跡/桂小五郎像 京都ホテルオークラの地は江戸時代長州藩邸のあった所。ホテル西側に桂小五郎像がある。桂は吉田松陰の門下生で、長州藩における討幕派の中心人物。池田屋事件では難を免れ、禁門の変では危機を切り抜け、芸妓幾松（のちの妻）にも助けられて、第一級の剣客でありながら人を斬らずに生きぬいた話は有名。慶応2年（1866）坂本龍馬の仲立ちで薩長はついに同盟に成功した。桂の力が大きかった。維新後、木戸孝允と改名。新政府で参議となり、版籍奉還、廃藩置県などの大事業に尽力した。大久保利通と対立、明治10年西南戦争では国を案じて「西郷いいかげんにしろ」と言った最後の言葉は有名。その戦中京都で病死、44歳。維新の傑物で畳の上で往生できた数少ない人物である。 (出典：史跡案内/河原町商店街振興組合HPより） Explanation version: Statue of Kogoro Katsura Kogoro Katsura (Kido Takayoshi, 1833-1877), who achieved the Meiji Restoration and laid the foundation for modern Japan, is a student of the Choshu clan, Shoin Yoshida.
