宮城県には、ここ瑞巌寺の他に、仙台市内（せんだいしない）にある、大崎八幡宮（おおさきはちまんぐう）の拝殿（はいでん）が、国宝に指定されています。
本堂（ほんどう）の正面に位置する、切妻造（きりつまづくり）、杮葺（こけらぶき）の四脚門（しきゃくもん）です。
本堂、庫裡（くり）、御成玄関、御成門などに見るように、瑞巌寺の建築物は本瓦葺が主流ですが、中門は唯一杮葺となっています。
扁額「瑞嵓円福禅寺」は瑞巌寺100世洞水東初禅師の揮毫（きもう）です。
御成門同様、附属する太鼓塀2棟とともに、昭和31年(1956)に国重要文化財に指定されました。
