A stone monument stands at the corner of Heian Jogakuin. Kyoto is a city with a lot of history.

The old Nijo Castle was built by Nobunaga Oda as the residence of Yoshiaki Ashikaga, the 15th shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. Currently, there are almost no remains of the castle. There is only a stone monument and an explanation board in one corner of the grounds of Heian Jogakuin. A part of the stone wall has been restored in Kyoto Gyoen, a short distance from the stone monument.

I didn't know the existence of the old Nijo Castle until I saw Kirin coming. There is only a monument, but it is also good to look at it while thinking about the Muromachi / Sengoku period.

Former Nijo Castle Ruins The current Nijo Castle was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa, and the former Nijo Castle was generally built by Nobunaga Oda for Yoshiaki Ashikaga. The remains of this former Nijo Castle are almost buried, but some of the remains of Ishigaki (image) are left near the southwestern part of the current Kyoto Imperial Palace. In addition, a stone monument and an explanation board are installed at the corner of the site of Heian Jogakuin, which went west from there. * By the way, the stone wall of the former Nijo Castle has been relocated to Nijo Castle so that you can tour it. #Castle #Castle #Castle Ruins #Kyoto #Former Nijo Castle #Site of Former Nijo Castle

This area is the site of Nijo Castle (separate from the current Nijo Castle) built by Nobunaga Oda for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki in 1569 (Eiroku 12).
It is now Heian Jogakuin, but a monument to the site of the former Nijo Castle is placed at the corner of Muromachi-dori and Shimodachiuri-dori. It was built by Nobunaga as the residence of Yoshiaki Ashikaga, the 15th shogun, but it was abandoned at the same time as the fall of the Muromachi Shogunate. Nijo Castle, which is currently in Nijo, was built by Ieyasu and has nothing to do with the main castle. It is accessible within a 5-minute walk from Marutamachi Station.

It is the site of the former Nijo Castle built by Nobunaga for Yoshiaki Ashikaga. Currently, there are no remains. In the former Nijo Castle, when Yoshiaki, who was hostile to Nobunaga, raised troops at Makishima Castle, Sadaoki Ise and Mitsubuchi Fujihide were placed in Nijo Castle, but they surrendered without a single battle. It seems that the castle was abandoned at that time.
