The old Nijo Castle was built by Nobunaga Oda as the residence of Yoshiaki Ashikaga, the 15th shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. Currently, there are almost no remains of the castle. A part of the stone wall has been restored in Kyoto Gyoen, a short distance from the stone monument.
