瓢亭 京都南禅寺畔 - Hyotei.co.jp

The flavour, ingredients and the presentation of the food were all impeccable. We’ve at kaiseki at other places and it needs to be said that, although this place is expensive, the choice of ingredients are also at the next level. Although it was a shame that we went in winter. It gets dark quite early - practically before dinner time. And you can’t open the windows to see the garden, as it’s cold. So in a way we felt like we lost some of the experience.

Never have I been to a place this tranquil. Timing of each course was spot on. Food was great.

Having visited and enjoyed a few Michelin star restaurants in the past, I have to say that this three star is a new and unique low. The beautiful setting and history are way above the culinary experience. Not only was the meal uninspired and lacking by today’s standards, but one of the dishes (the sweet fish) made my meal companion very ill. Immediately after eating that course he began complaining about his stomach and right after we paid, he ran to the bathroom and vomited for what must have been at least twenty minutes. I really hope that Google allows for the inclusion of video because the sounds of him retching are really the best review I could give. Unfortunately, after they heard him punishing the toilet (he’s actually now at the hotel throwing up again thirty minutes later) and after he explained that the meal was the source of his pain, they didn’t apologize. That said, after explaining our experience to our hotel concierge (they recommended the restaurant), they called the restaurant and my friend was reimbursed for his meal. I can only imagine that Michelin gave this restaurant 3 stars because it’s 450 years old and scenic. Or perhaps my friend and I lack the culinary vocabulary (and digestive hardiness) to understand and appreciate the meal. All in all, much to my disappointment and considering the price, I cannot recommend this establishment. It has made me re-evaluate my opinion of the Michelin rating system.

A wonderful experience if you want an authentic dining experience. This 400yr old establishment is surrounded by green moss gardens with carp in ponds. You get private dining with zen views of the garden. The tamago, and fish in miso are excellent.

This was a great cultural experience and we are glad to have the experience but this is not up to 3 Michelin star standard and the price is astronomical for what is produced. The service was superb, the dishes came out way too fast though, we were in and out in less than 2 hours for the largest taster menu offering. We were sat in a bare private hut with no window, music or distractions, to be honest, It really lacked atmosphere. This is a real traditional Japanese kaiseki experience also with 16th century food. I have been fortunate enough to dine at dozens of Michelin star restaurants including 5 x 3 Michelin star restos and this can not even be considered within the same league of this high gastronomical accolade! If money or gastronomic enlightenment is not your concern then this is a very nice way to spend a couple of hours, this is all however my view on this, food as well as experience is subjective. There’s only one way to find out for sure...

Eating here is a special treat. I’ve had ogayu for breakfast, and obento for lunch. Both were much more than gayu and bento! Very highly recommended, especially if you are looking for something very special in the morning. If you don’t speak Japanese, be sure to have a friend, or someone from your hotel, make a reservation for you by phone.

A very special dining experience in a Michelin starred restaurant in Japanese Cuisine. They have a very thoughtful seating arrangement for non-Japanese where you don;t need to bend your knee. You should consider the dinner is more than a meal but also a show. Foods are really good and waitresses are very friendly and can communicate in fluent English.
