烏山線の終着駅で路線名にもなっているため知名度のある駅である。那須烏山市の中心的な駅で、龍門の滝や山あげ会館などの観光地もあり、バスの発着もある。そのためか、駅前はそこそこ賑わっているようす。駅前には小さな焦点があり、うどんやそばなどを頂ける。一方で駅の設備だが、有人駅ではあるものの、みどりの窓口はなく、すべて、券売機での発券となる。入場券も売っていない。駅舎内に駅スタンプがあり、パンフレット類も揃っていて、出迎えられているきがする。トイレもきれいなので、比較的利用しやすい駅である。

烏山にいる友人に数年ぶりに会いに折角なので烏山線を使わせていただきました。 駅舎立て替えたんですね!レトロな印象だったので到着してビックリしました。昔の駅舎も風情があって好きでしたが、綺麗な駅舎もいいですね。車両も新しく静かでした。構内も今時っぽい町おこしののぼりや駅前にはレンタサイクルがあったりで駅周辺散策も楽しめそうです。

= 駅と?言うより烏山線の列車が = = 盲腸線終着駅シリーズ① = 烏山線は、全国初のハイブリッド列車で有名。東北線宇都宮ー宝積寺間と烏山駅構内は充電し、その他非電化区間は蓄電した電力で、それぞれモーターを動かして運転する。乗ってみると昔の気動車と違って静穏。旅情をかき立てないのが贅沢なくらい。 肝心の駅自体は…何の変哲もない 盲腸線の終着駅だが、毎年7月末の山あげ祭りだけは別。駅前は山あげが転回するからもちろん、ホームも待合室もトイレまでもババ混みするから、うまく利用しましょう。

駅舎が斬新な形をしていますね。烏山線は、蓄電池電車のEV-E301系という車両が活躍しているのですが、この烏山駅には折り返しの停車時間で充電する為に剛体架線が設置されています。パンタグラフを下げたままやって来た車両が、一旦パンタグラフを上げて充電し、再びパンタグラフを下ろして折り返し発車していく様子はなかなか珍しい光景だと思います。 因みに、駅前には飲食店があります。
