Easy to get around, and lots of options for shopping. Bit of a queue to get out at the staffed gates with the JR Pass.

Atami Station was opened in the year 1925. Because to its location on the side of a steep hill, Atami Station is built on several levels. You have free Wi-Fi facility at the station exit. The Tokaido Main Line and Ito Line share one side platform and two island platforms with five tracks connected by an underpass to the station building. The Tokaido Shinkansen is one level higher and connected to the lower platforms by an underpass. Atami station is served by the Tokaido Main Line, Tokaido Shinkansen and Ito Line.

I waited in line for 30 minutes to buy tickets for the Shinkansen, there were only 5 people ahead of me. Once I got to the counter, it took almost 10 minutes to get my tickets processed. There were only two desk agents and the one that helped me was slow. Surprised by how slow this was when compared to the streamlined process in other stations!

Absolutely not convenient at all if your transferring. The trains are all over the place. For 12 years they've been useless. For example, just today I got off an express Odoriko train, walked immediately AND quickly to the train for Mishima and it left as I was walking up the stairs to the platform. This transfer station seems designed to piss as many people off as possible. It's fine for going to Atami though

If you're going to Atami station, and your used to the speedy transit system from Tokyo, be prepared to wait a little longer for your train here. Depending on where your going from Atami station, you may be able to get the exact time slots for departures/arrivals. And if so, it's best to find that out ahead of time. Going to Tokyo, I waited for about 20 minutes. That's just the nature of a non busy station. So plan ahead of time. If not, no worries. They do have a shopping area connected to the station that you can explore a bit while waiting for your train.

From this station, you can get to Hamamatsu from the westbound train on the Tokaido Line , from the eastbound of the Tokaido Line, you can get to the center of Tokyo (Shinagawa, Tokyo, Ueno) and also on the Ito Line, you can get to Ito and Izukyu-Shimoda. From here you can also ride on the toll limited express train Odoriko. This train usually go to Tokyo, Izukyu- Shimoda from here. The Shinkansen Kodama and sometimes Hikari stops here. At this station, there is a great Japanese soba and udon restaurant on platform number 1. You can order right outside of the restaurant. There, you will find a ticket machine and you have choice to pick any item on the menu. Make sure to decide either you will get the soba or the udon. There are no chairs and it is a small place. On average, five people at the time can be in that restaurant. However, the udon tastes great and the workers were really friendly and helpful. It is not as crowded and if you happened to be at the Atami Station, especially alone, for a lunch, I believe that is definitely a place to go.
