★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 鎌倉時代・関東の御家人より石材に彫刻を施す「板碑（いたび）文化」が東播磨へ持ち込まれました。その素材に古墳の石棺から流用し仏像の彫刻を施した石棺仏・石棺板碑が生み出されており、この仏はその一体とされています。この場所では詳しい説明はないのですが、ハメ塚（ハメ＝マムシ）なのか？、この石仏の右に小さな石碑があり、そこに「蝮塚」と彫られています。そこからこの石仏はそのように呼ばれるようになったそうです。見学の際は、草むらに足を入れるので蛇事態を見ることがめっきり少なくなりましたが、足元に注意してください。
