Seeing the blood on the ceiling was one the historical highlights of my entire trip. It’s very morbid, but right up my alley.

If you want to visit something different, that temple is perfect. The staff is really nice.

Don't pay to enter the two room tour, it's not in English. But the ceiling is made out of the floor where samurai's bleed to death at Fushimi Castle, creepy!

Small temple with hundreds years old bloody footprints and stains on the ceiling! (It was once the floor in another residence) It is all Japanese, but there was a nice guy explaining it in broken English. Highly recommended.

This is another beautiful buddhist temple in Kyoto. There is no admission fee to walk around the grounds but I don't believe you can actually enter the temple itself.

Very interesting place. Although the visit is only made in Japanese and at the beginning you have no idea what is going to happen (they guide you to a room, with poor lightning and play a older tape recorder in Japanese), the realisation that you are basically under blood stained roofs is crazy. After the introduction (all in Japanese) of the first room, the guide take you to a small closer room and then after this room he/she bring you back to the previous room where with the help of a light bulb start to show the clear signs of faces/legs/hands/shoulders stained in blood on the wood. It’s morbid. Yes, totally. Still fascinating. The guide kindly translated many things in her own mobile to English to help the foreigners to understand what was going on (the main explanations and comments). I recommend going in a clear sunny day to facilitate the visualisation of the ceilings, but if you have no other choice and is raining, go anyway!

Don't miss the booklet! Photography is not allowed inside but we later learned that you can ask for a 500 yen booklet containing pictures of the blood stains in the ceiling as it has timber from Fushimi castle where a gruesome battle was fought. You can't walk the small temple freely but it has a continuously looping tour (all in japanese only) you can jump in and out of. It is an eerie feeling seeing the shapes bodies, hands and feet of the fallen warriors from so many centuries ago.

Temple was still closed since I arrived too early, But it was still captivating, couldn't wait for my next visit and see the inside of the famous bloody rooftop.
