「明治十三年（一八八〇）二月十八日午前五時三〇分頃大きな火の玉が尾を引きながら南から北に向けて飛び来一大音響とともに落下した
この光芒は兵庫大阪京都の三府県でも観察された
落下地点の字名により竹ノ内隕石と命名され重さは七一八、七グラムあった
国立科学博物館村山定男氏の調査の結果本邦に於いて落下日時場所標本が確認され化学分析等の科学的研究が行われた最初の隕石である
このことは日本の科学史上貴重な資料であるといえる
ここに落下百年を記念し現地に碑を建立して後世に伝える」
残念ながら隕石は置いてありません。

ただ、明治以前にも日本に落下した隕石はいくつも記録されていても、科学的にきちんと分析されたものの最初であり、日本の科学史において重要なもののようです。
肝心の隕石はつくば市の専門施設に展示してあるようですが、地元の郷土館でレプリカなら見られるみたいです。
