여긴 예약을 해야만 갈 수 있는 꽤 가격대가 높은 가게이긴 한데 돈값은 충분히(?) 합니다. 쉐프께서는 평소 외국 유명인사의 퍼스널 파티쉐프로도 초대를 많이 받아서 다니신다고 하시더군요. 영어도 잘 하시니 소통에도 별 문제가 없고 재미있으신 분이십니다. 신선하고 색다른 재료는 기본이고 새로운 조리법도 많이 적용해서 다양하게 오마카세를 진행하셔서 좋은 경험 받았습니다. 2-3명 기준으로 한번에 세 팀 정도까지 받을 수 있는 규모인데, 천천히 꽤 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 서빙하시는데 아주 만족스러웠습니다. 추천합니다.
It's a pretty high priced shop that you can only go to by making a reservation, but it's worth the money. The chef said that he usually receives many invitations as a personal party chef of foreign celebrities. He speaks English well, so there is no problem in communication and he is fun. Fresh and different ingredients are the basics, and a lot of new recipes have been applied, so I had a good experience with various Omakase. It is a scale that can receive up to three teams at a time based on 2-3 people, and I was very satisfied with slowly serving it over quite a long time. I recommend it.

絶品。鮨。一度じゃ理解できない程に鮨の奥ゆかしさを体験させてもらえるお店。加えて小野さんの人柄がとてもよく、お話を聞くだけで学びが多い。

Owner / master Ono opened this classic Edo Mae (authentic Edo style) sushi place about 2 and ¼ years ago, though I think he’s in the industry well over two decades. While there are private rooms (2, I think, never been), when you are at a sushi place, you got to eat at the counter, which if I remember fits a party of 8 here at Ono. Sushi and Tempura, are the only styles in the world that I can think of where a chef cooks in front of their customers. If you have ever been here, you will be convinced that every move Ono makes is intentional, and he does not waste any second. This tiny gem is where you can enjoy a culinary art by Ono’s performance. In a way, it’s not a relaxing atmosphere. I would even describe the ambience here as,, there is almost a tension. It’s similar to going to the Lincoln Center, in a way. I don’t know a thing about music, but I certainly enjoy every piece that Ono creates. Absolutely no reason to hide at the private room, Ono’s moves are part of the experience. They offer a fixed menu, while the signature piece is called “Ono Special”. It’s a roll with grilled otoro (tuna belly) and some sort of green onion. If you appreciate a fatty tuna meat, this is a high quality, well executed one. My favorites when it comes to sushi in general are those blue looking fishes, aji, sanma, iwashi, saba, kohada, hamachi, buri,,, kohada from Ono’s hand was extraordinary that I kept asking for extra pieces multiple times (not the coolest thing to do, as their supply is prob limited per reservations of the day, just couldn’t help myself). At some point, he sliced the fish in a different way, and texture was completely different. I bet someone who came up with the term “foodgasm” must have been inspired by this place. Tokyo is lucky that this place exists down there. My two cents to group foreigners. Once served you piece, do not wait for everyone else in the group to be served. It is not rude in this case, you are in a different country, different rules apply. Rice is sensitive. The longer you wait, the worse quality the one you could potentially have enjoyed becomes. Think of a fresh pizza pie now sitting at the table for no reason. Similarly, do not waste a second by taking pictures, your brain will remember the taste. Once served, immediately to your mouth is the only necessary reaction for your great joy.

Here I am end of 2020 reminiscing our trip to Japan in October 2019, and coming to eat at Sushi-ya Ono was a highlight we still talk about today! All the staff and sushi chefs were so kind and accomodating. The atmosphere inside was intimate and tranquil. Every dish was superb from start to finish (including dessert!). When we’re able to go back, would love to eat here again!
