Sekizan Zen-in is situated in Shugaku-in ( the Northeast of Kyoto ). It is a direction from which the evil influences are likely to come. According to the yin-yan philosophy the temple gate is called "Omote Kimon" (Outer demon gate) which is used as protection from the bad luck coming through the gates. The temple is known for being a part of the pilgrimage to the "Seven Lucky Gods" and its profound history of more than 1100 years. It was founded by Enrin in 888 AD it belongs to a Tendai sect of Buddhism unique to Enryakuji Temple located on Mt. Hiei. TGM Kyoto Guide

Small, but beautiful shrine. Only if you have enough time, visit it.

Pretty temple which is located close to an imperial villa. It's nothing special, but there are almost no people here compared to other places in Kyoto. It's free to enter but is a fair walk from the closest train station or bus stop

Very beautiful temple with pretty big garden. I would say one of my favorite in Kyoto. It’s also very quiet and peaceful. The entrance is free.
