Everyone knows that Toyotomi Hideyoshi draws river water here as water for making tea. In the "Uji Tea Festival" in October every year, the "Famous Water Extraction Ceremony" is held between the three. The view of Uji River from the distance between the three is also beautiful. However, why is the "between the three" called "between the three"?
Let the Japanese Cartographic Society, map researcher Kenji Asai explain the horror legend of "between the three"...
From the west end of the Uji Bridge that spans the Uji River, there is a small area protruding from the bridge between the pillars of the third bridge.
Why is this place only prominent?
This unique structure of Uji Bridge is actually the ruins of an ancestral hall of "Hashihime", the patron saint of the bridge. Hashihime is the god of severance and jealousy. It is said that cutting off rotten peach blossoms and other evil relationships is very effective.
Uji Bridge is known as one of the "Three Old Bridges in Japan". It is a bridge with a long history. This old bridge has left behind the horrible legend of Hashihime. The plot of a woman maddened by jealousy who wants to curse and kill her opponent is quite similar to the ugly worship of Kifune Shrine, and it is very likely that this kind of story is the prototype.
In the reign of Emperor Saga (809-823), there was a daughter of a public servant whose husband was abducted by his mistress, and he became resentful and jealous and vowed to avenge his mistress. She went to Kibune Shrine to retreat for seven days, and pleaded with Kifune Omyojin, hoping to turn into a ghost curse to kill the woman who took her husband away. Omyojin gave a magic sign and told her that if she really wanted to become a ghost, she would dress up as a ghost and soak in Ujigawa for thirty-seven days, so that she could curse her mistress.
After hearing this, the daughter was overjoyed, and immediately returned to Beijing, tied her long hair into five horns, smeared red rouge on her face, and smeared her body with pill soil (red soil) to pretend to be a red ghost. Wearing an upside-down iron wheel, the iron wheel ignited the torch with three legs, and a torch lit at two ends in his mouth, it seemed like an evil spirit indeed. When the sky was about to dawn, the daughter dressed as a ghost walked south from Yamato Oro and soaked in the Uji River for thirty-seven days, and finally turned into an evil ghost.
The daughter first kills the most jealous woman, then her ex-husband and her relatives. When you kill a man, you become a female ghost, and when you kill a woman, you become a male ghost. This ghost girl plunges the entire Kyoto into the abyss of terror.
People in Kyoto are afraid to step out of their homes at night. In order to seal the disaster caused by this ghost girl, it was between the three of Uji Bridge, and he was asked to guard the Uji River as a bridge girl and build an ancestral hall for worship. Now it is moved to Hashihime Shrine on the west bank of the Uji River for worship.
