At more than 850 years old, Tsuen Tea is the oldest tea shop in the world. Thew shop itself is in a picturesque part of town next to a bridge across the river. It's small, but they offer free samples of most of the tea they sell. As per any place outside of the main tourist traps, don't expect that anyone can speak English.
Why only three stars? The way they brew the tea is very unusual. Even the very expensive teas tasted brackish, like they were brewed with seawater, or had nori added to them. This is not normal for Japan or even for Uji, for what I could tell. I bought some tea anyway, and when I brewed it, it tasted very good, like what I would expect a high-end tea to taste like. Very good, with delicate flavors, and not a hint of salinity. So, go there to buy tea, but drink it somewhere else.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ How could you not like this place, it's one of the OG tea stores in Uji. Even their free cup of tea was better than anything i have had before. The tea prices range from affordable low end teas to expensive high end teas. If you are in Uji, you will most likely stumble across this store and it is definitely worth visiting.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The uji kintoki soft cream was delicious and had a nice selection of sweets to try. The matcha was also very nice and was a nice place to try properly for the first time. Even the complimentary tea was delicious.
The staff were very helpful and spoke English well if you are a tourist, and even let us try some tea before buying which was very nice

Historical store that has been around for a long time. Stocks some of the best Japanese tea in Japan and are run by adorable looking new generation of young Japanese. Definitely must try the tea if you are in the Uji area.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is one of the oldest tea shops in the town. Bought all my Japanese tea ceremonial ware here. It is the first few buildings you'll since once you get out of the train station. The shop has a very rustic and traditional atmosphere to it. Lots of kids come here for ice cream too.
