多摩川沿いに丸子橋から沼部、千鳥町までに主要水路を指す。高低差があり地盤も固く開削工事が困難で女性まで動員されたが男だけで作業していたときより能力が上がり完成した。
もう一つの由来は多摩川浅間神社の女神が現れ、丘を切り崩さないお告げがあったとか。
