Of course, the soba is delicious and you can enjoy it very much. This is a shop that I definitely want to visit again. You should make a reservation.

J	John Ashburne on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Mr Matsumoto is serious about his work, and wants to give you the best experience possible. He isn’t racist. That’s ridiculous. He just can’t speak English, and doesn’t want to disappoint. His soba is excellent, btw.
J	Jamison Boissevain on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We decided to try Matsumoto after seeing it recommended as a bib gourmand restaurant on the Michelin guide. The restaurant was tough to find but we managed to find it in its back alley. When we arrived at the restaurant it was almost completely empty. We asked the man who greeted us for three seats and he asked us in perfect English if we spoke Japanese. When we informed him we did not he refused to serve us. We have been to many much nicer reviewed restaurants on this trip and not had any problems. I don't care how good the food might be, blatantly racist seating policies should not be allowed or encouraged. I hope this review helps any other non-Japanese foodies avoid similar embarrassment and anger.

I had two American friends visiting so I decided it would be a great place to enjoy some soba. I asked in Japanese if he could seat three. He said he could, but since they were closing soon he could only serve what he could. I thought this was perfectly acceptable and wanted to confirm if that was ok with my friends. When he overheard me conversing in English, he asked if we were foreigners. When I replied that we were, he said in no uncertain terms that foreigners were not welcome. I understand him not wanting his small shop to become the next tourist trap, but it was jingoistic, infuriating, and I had to deeply apologize to my friends for the rude behavior. Thankfully there are more the plenty of restaurants in Kyoto that serve amazing food and know how to host both locals and foreigners alike in the spirit of “omotenashi.”
