★ ★ ★ ★ ★ awesome true local experience. Make sure to get there early to avoid waiting. While there is an English menu, it doesn't contain everything. The photos on Google map helped a lot and I simply pointed the pictures to the waiter.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We wanted to try a local izakaya during our stay in Kyoto. We took advice from the kind staff of our guesthouse and went to Tatsumi.
Arrived there, we were refused because they saw that we are foreigners. They said that the restaurant was closing at 8:30 pm (it was 7:45pm) but it was written closing at 10 pm on the front door!
It was mean. So if you don't speak Japanese don't go there !!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great place for beer and tempura and they have an English menu! We stopped here because we were walking around looking for tempura and saw some in their plastic food display outside the restaurant. We looked it up on Google and were a bit reluctant because we saw the review about foreigners being turned away but decided to walk in anyways. We were greeted in a friendly manner and given an English menu. We ordered some drinks and a selection of tempura from the menu and it was all delicious. The place was packed with Japanese at 2pm and I think we were the only foreigners there so it seems like a popular local Izakaya.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very local place. Very cheap and food is definetely good! But i don't feel safe in such places. It looks like the trash room - absolutely dirty, so i wasn't sure if i could eat anything there without getting some bacteria or virus. Sure as well, there are rats living in this building. Then it's crowded pretty all the hours, and most of the tine with alredy drunk office workers who speaks very loud. If you don't like to scream to be heard and if you like quite and clean places - Tatsumi is not for you.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I can tell this place is absolutely authentic of Japan atmosphere, i can see the building is very old and this old place was around 50yo or over i think, the food was amazing, but you have to bear with standing and they have limited time if you want to spend your time there. It’s only 2 hours max time for staying there
