★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very underwhelming for a Michelin Star restaurant. The flavours were simply not present or satisfying. Of all the courses, only one could be considered good. I ended up having a similar meal at another restaurant that was far superior. I hope this was just a one-off, otherwise the Michelin guide may need some revision

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stunning culinary skill and presentation. Quality ingredients used in every dish, with the equally superb cooking skill and creativity to match. Like sliced bamboo with sesame paste, smoked salmon with fig/yuzu jelly , Chef tried to put his own touch to the food. Although I have tasted food of an even higher standard, this is still amazing. Oh yes, this was my 2nd visit...

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My wife and I just enjoyed the beautiful Hana kaiseki dinner prepared here. Each course was absolutely delicious and played on varying themes of flavor and texture. Among them all some of my favorites were the pickled vegetables that came with a duck course. They were delightfully tart and refreshing. My wife's favorite was an impeccably grilled miso-soaked fish... It was moist and flaky with an amazing flavor throughout. The chef spoke quite good English, much better than my Japanese abilities, and was happy to explain each dish that we had questions about. Absolutely recommend going here for the experience if you can.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was an absolute delight to dine here with my wife! It’s a casual cosy setting with a friendly chef who speaks English well. A bit over our budget but we have no regrets.
Loved the detail, flavours and ambience of the place. The chef also decides what to make on the day according to the price range you choose.
Would highly recommend it ??

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Impeccably prepared meal with attention to every detail. In a beautiful location right along the river. What's more, they accommodated our family with our 10 month old daughter , and we had essentially a private dinner together as a family. Would not have been possible otherwise.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had a nice kaiseki ryori at Kappo Sakamoto in sept 2017. The quality of the food was expectedly very good(4 stars) but it also lacked surprises. The service however was lacking (2 stars) compare to similar restaurants in Kyoto. Perhaps it was a language barrier from the woman serving us.

We tried to guess which each plate was, chef Sakamoto corrected us each time :-) He and his team are polite, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable about everything they're serving. He explained to us his goal for each plate, the flow of the meals, and how he decides what to serve. It was a experience!
Fast facts for English speaking travelers:
- their English is very very good!
- they took Visa
- the restaurant is accessed by the street side and it's down a hallway. Cannot be accessed by the river side, although there is an underrated view from the windows.
- mostly geigen in there with us. Didn't really seem like a local joint, but it was amazing - don't let that stop you.
