古名には場所がわからなくなったものが多くあります。
ここもそうなるかもしれない。仙台市教育委員会が建てた看板以外に何もなくなっていました。
以前はここに生えている菅をまもる専任の人がいたのではないかと推測されるほどに大事にされた場所なのです。
「十符の菅」とは・・・・以前この辺は湿地帯で菅が生い茂っていたそうです。ここの菅はとても長かったらしく敷物(十符の菅菰[すがこも])を作ったときに編み込みが十か所もつくれたというのです。菅でつくった敷物を見たことがありませんが、簾(すだれ)を想像してください。ここの菅でつくった敷物はあの紐の部分が十か所あったといわれています。
「みちのくの 十符の菅薦 七符には 君を寝させて 三符に我が寝む」
この歌の出典を読んでいないので歌の背景をりかいしていませんが、、
「敷物の網目の7網目分の広さであなたに寝ていただき、私は網目の三つ分で眠る」という歌です。どなたの歌かわかりませんが、作者は女性なのでしょうね。「君」と呼んでいるので貴い方なのでしょうか。
今のように絨毯やエアコンのなかった昔は、広さの十分にある敷物は贅沢なものだったのかもしれませんね。

What is "Jufu no Suga"?... It seems that there used to be a swamp in this area in the wetlands. It seems that the kan here seems to be very long, and when we made the rug (Sugakomo), there were 10 braids. I've never seen a rug made from suga, but imagine a blind. It is said that the rug made from Kan had 10 parts of that string.

In the old days when there were no carpets or air conditioners like this, rugs with ample space may have been luxurious.
