Awesome temple complex close to Kyoto station. Can be reached easily by feet from Kyoto station in less than 10 minutes. The temples are allowed to enter without shoes but for free. This temple complex is definitely worth to visit and only takes about half an hour to see everything.

My favourite temple by far. Every time I am in Kyoto this is part of the agenda no matter how tight it is. It is only a good five minutes walk from the Kyoto station so it is very conveniently located. Now finally the restauration of 10+ years has been finished so you can actually see the whole facade of both of the main temples in its full glory. No entrance fee, so you don’t have a reason not to visit here.

This place is second to none. On my on my! The temple is huge! One of the largest, if not the largest wooden structure in the world. Definitely a "hidden" gem....... You really can't tell how big this temple is from the outside. Photos cannot do justice. Recommended to go any time but do spend some time inside the building. Its great place to meditate. Don't rush. I can spend whole day.... If there weren't Yodobashi camera 2 minutes away. Bring your super wide angle lens!

Another very beautiful temple in Kyoto. Several buildings covering a large area. Very pretty carvings on the temple and just stunning inside (no pictures allowed inside). It's not too far of a walk from other temples, as well, so we were able to see this one and Sanjusangendo.

You can realise huge temple just after walking out Kyoto station to Northward within 5 min, that is Higashi Honganji. It is free to enter the main gate, plaza and main temple. (You can sit down on traditional "Tatami", which is plant made carpet.)

It is free to enter. You just need to remove your shoes and put them into a plastic bag start in the one infront of you and go clockwise. The detailing is very beautiful. It is very peaceful inside. Make sure to be quiet in respect for those who are praying. There are a few bathrooms on premises and you can walk here from Kyoto station.

Quite possibly one of the highlights of our trip. It's a hidden (from tourists) gem. Given the amazing architecture and spiritual vibe the place has, it's quite surprising how little tourists there are. Although the area open for visit (as of 2020) are quite small, and you could probably cover the whole place in under 20 minutes, it has quite a charm to it. Definitely a must go, especially before more tourists come to the place. Just hang around and appreciate the place ;)

A beautiful and large temple complex in the heart of Kyoto. There is so much to see and experience, I recommend that you give yourself a few hours to visit here, there is so much. There are multiple temple for praying, there’s also a museum with theater for you to sit and learn about it’s history. It was a great learning experience and quite fun.
