修験道においては、閼伽をお釈迦様の心の水として特に重視します。
閼伽はサンスクリット語アルギャの音写です。阿伽、遏伽あつかとも書きます。原語の意味は価値ある物を意味します。最初はお供物を指しましたが、後にお供物を盛る容器も閼伽と呼ぶようになります。
そして、インドでは仏様や神様にお供え物をする時、水は必ず供えられましたので、特にお供え用の水を閼伽または閼伽水と呼ぶようになりました。
