In the old days, all of this hill was a large shrine dedicated to Kenshin. I thought it was only inside the current iron fence, but it was actually a very large shrine. I imagined that the area around that fence was probably the place where Kenshin's corpse was enshrined.

It is very awful to think that the ruins of Takanobu Uesugi were enshrined in this place once. It seems to be at a shrine in the city now.

In the Edo period, this is the place where the Mido, where the remains of Kenshin Uesugi were enshrined, was built. At the time of the abolition of the feudal clan in the Meiji era, Kenshin became the deity of the Uesugi Shrine, and in addition, the remains were moved to the Uesugi family's mausoleum, which is the graveyard of the Uesugi family.
The stone monument built on the site of the shrine was erected in 1884, and was written by Sayaken Isa, who has worked on many stone monuments in Yonezawa City. Currently, it is covered with a fence to prevent entry, but it is so weathered that the characters are almost unreadable. Please refer to the original text that can be read, relying on the materials in the library.

"Mido ruins of the deceased lord who misses spring"
It is the "Uesugi Kenshin Shrine Ruins" that was treated by the Uesugi family as the most sacred place in Yonezawa. The cherry blossoms are beautiful in spring, and it is located on a hill where cherry blossom viewing visitors are crowded.
The Uesugi family, who changed their country to the Yonezawa domain in the early Edo period, placed the corpse of Kenshin Uesugi here. Until the Meiji era, the remains of Kenshin were housed in two bodies, "Zenkoji Nyorai" and "Mudashi Bishamon Statue", and it seems that the mortuary tablets of successive feudal lords were also here.
When the Yonezawa Domain disappeared due to the abolition of the domain, Kenshin became the deity of the Uesugi Shrine, and the corpse was moved to the Uesugi Temple. The monument here now was erected in September of the 24th year of the Meiji era.
I haven't seen it, but "Zenkoji Nyorai" and "Mudashi Bishamonten" may have been taken away from Mt. Kousagi in Sekikawa Village when Kenshin was young. Kousagisan is a steep and difficult place to climb with a horse, but there is a legend that two of them were taken away by Kenshin on a horse and disappeared.
Miyaji-san will tell you more about this legend when you go to Hikariusagi Shrine. The Yonezawa Domain and Sekikawa Village have an inseparable relationship. If so, it would be very interesting.
By the way, if you want to join hands with Kenshin's graveyard, please go to Uesugi Gobyo. There is an admission fee, but it is several hundred yen. It is a very mysterious place where the mausoleums of the historical feudal lords are lined up in the cedar forest. The mausoleum of Kenshin is always beautifully decorated with flowers. please.
