Probably one of the best Udon places in Kyoto, and it's inexpensive. Highly recommend, the staff is extremely nice as well. You have to wait a bit outside but I would wait an hour or more, it is THAT GOOD! Come to Menzou!

Superb udon noodles. The cold udon noodles are wonderfully chewy, perfectly slippery and cool on the outside and firm and springy in the middle. The accompanying vegetable tempura was absolutely epic—flawlessly executed and absolutely delicious. And to top it off, the staff was kind, friendly, and generous. A thoroughly enjoyable meal! I’d go back in a heartbeat.

All kind of food makes me happy. Thanks Yamamoto ;) This place is the best I’v been to in Japan!! I’m back to write detailed review. When I had the first bite the noodle, I thought “omg.what is this? The noodle is dancing in my mouth like alive fish!!” -that’s all what I wanted to say.

We waited for around 1 hour! The line was very long and filled with both tourists and locals, which is a really good sign about the taste. We ordered one hot and one cold udon. The hot udon with burdock tempura was a bit spicy, but the burdock tempura went really well with the soup. On the other hand, the cold udon was really refreshing and the vegetable tempura that came alongside it makes it taste really great with each and every single bite. Overall, the waiting time for us was very harsh, but the taste make it all worth it!

Worth the wait in line. They are well organized and ready for the crowds. They tape the orders while you are still on the street, so when you are seated, your order goes in. Cash only. Friendly and helpful staff. We showed the slightest interest in what was the protocol and what spices and additives to choose and everyone was excited that we were interested.

This udon restaurant serves up wonderful tempura, superb tsuyu (dipping sauce), and life-changing udon noodles. They have a slight mochi-mochi (chewy) texture and I dare say it’s better than Sanuki udon. I found out afterwards that it’s got a Michelin Bib Gourmand rating. I can see why. Making reservations is a must. You’ll then get an appointed time to show up, then the waitress will call you when it’s your turn. 100% worth the wait.

Some of the best udon I’ve ever had. It was handmade in front of us & perfectly cooked with great texture (not stuck together, not chewy). I had the curry udon, which was not too thick and a savory, mildly sweet flavor. The tempura was perfectly fried in a flaky light batter. Definitely going back next time I’m in Japan.

Best udon in Kyoto and also kids friendly! I used to live 10 minutes walk away and this was my favorite udon place in Kyoto. This is the first time I come with my 11-month-old son and our experience was great. They offered high chair and also plate and mug for kids. They also offered an udon cutter which is very helpful. I will definitely visit again when we go to Kyoto.
