★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Small garden that offers both a rock garden and a view over running water with maples and sakura. Worth visiting even in winter but would be spectacular in Cherry Blossom season. Quiet and off the typical tourist trail so few visitors to get in the way.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This place gives us a very luxury experience, vegan lunch, meditation and more! No wifi. Very cold in the winter, few places have air conditioning.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Taizo-in offers seasonal special admission plans and you can visit there in the late evening and enjoy fancy Shojin cuisine in their tea house.
I strongly recommend that you visit here in early spring for gorgeous cherry blossom viewing and also in late November for coloured leaves viewing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A Buddhist temple containing beautiful Zen gardens, an enormous 50 year old weeping cherry tree and a fascinating 600 year old Zen drawing by master Josetzu. One if the gardens was created by Motonibu (1476-1559).
We arrived on a Sunday morning at 9am and we were the only people there. It’s a great place for photos. There is also an English audio guide.
It’s very close to the Golden Pavilion it would be possible to see both on one day.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful at any season. Note the catfish “mascot” as he is able to be caught with the other mascot, the gourd. You can enjoy matcha with a sweet if you like. The sweet features the little catfish motif, and contains a red bean and dried fruits mixture (very original). I spotted an eye-level roof tile with the little fish as well!
