Stayed here for two nights. Wonderful peaceful place that is central to many things. You can use the bikes for free to ride around Kyoto. The mediation is lovely and they serve matcha and sweets after. The staff is very lovely and speaks good English. Wonderful, very adorable place I would definitely stay at again.

Stayed at the guest house located inside the temple's grounds. It is a unique experience and a welcome change after a hustle of Tokyo. Stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed it. Zen meditation classes held at 9.30 am are great and not to be missed. Fast free wifi, complimentary use of bikes. Bring in food / snacks if you need to, as there is nothing to purchase in the vicinity. 15 min bike ride to Golden pavilion. Keep in mind that it is a 15-20 min walk from the train station and is also quite away from central Kyoto.

Excellent location!! Very well organized. Clean and friendly. This is a great place to come and experience Kyoto, Japan and its culture through the lens of a Budhist temple. There is so much to see and experience. Grab a bike(which are free to use) and soak up this little enclave of Japan.

This is an amazing place and in my opinion one of the must-sees if you are interested in temples, meditation, etc. We stayed here for one night and when it came time to leave, we wished that we had a few more days in Kyoto to stay here! The fee to stay here is affordable, but make sure you book early since they don't have many rooms. Bike rentals are free if you stay with them--a great way to go around Kyoto! The meditation class in the morning was a great experience as well as informative, as Rev. Takafumi Kawakami first explains the different views and techniques on meditation, and touches on the cultural, historic as well as scientific aspects of meditation before the actual meditation session starts. To be honest, I thought this would be boring, but in reality, it was one of the highlights of our trip!

Best stay in our 6-week allover Japan trip! Our room was spacious, meticulously clean and we had a private toilet and shower (normal sized!). Staff are friendly and helpful. The common kitchen/pantry is well stocked. Peaceful environs, ideal for meditations (sitting and walking). Highly recommend the zen meditation classes here by a super wise and humourous English speaking monk.

You can just rent a room if you like. However I went to the retreat and stayed for two or three days. I had a great time it was peaceful I met new people from all over the world, hand meditations, fun evenings, and lots of food. It’s also just a block or two from the train station.

Staying at Shunkoin Temple was a great experience. An easy walk from the train station. The grounds are beautiful and quiet. It was so nice to wake up in the mornings to the prayer bells. The rooms are sparsely furnished, but they are very comfortable and spacious. We did the meditation and tour with the priest - and I highly recommend it. It was a great introduction to meditation. There are bikes available so you can explore the neighbourhood. Lots of great (and unique) restaurants in the area. I would definitely stay here again - for longer next time!
