First taste when I came over to Gion, had it again before leaving Kyoto and headed to Osaka. Today, I went back to Kyoto to take a last look at the cherry blossoms in full bloom in Maruyama Park and I had it again! Simply awesome - Cold soba at it's best, and the nishin is a must try, their specialty, 9 out of 10 orders would be nishin soba. Served by a group of old grannies but no worries, English menu is available :)

Tried the herring soba and tempura at Matsuba - both were simple but well executed. The soba has great texture, and the cured herring has a really interesting flavor. Service was good as well. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Corner shop in Gion that serves local soba. The must tries are the herring soba. Should also try any cold soba dish. Personally the taste of soba is better cold than with broth. You can taste the flavor of the noodles without the influence of the broth. Tad bit pricey but worth it if you want to try good soba.

Came here for the local Herring soba. The herring is strong tasting but balanced out beautifully with the broth and noodle. Staff are friendly and an English menu is available. Tables are located upstairs at this location.

In general the food taste is ok. If you like something light, delicate, this is probably suitable for you. If you are like us that like a flavourful broth, probably you would find this a bit bland. Menu in English available. Staffs are nice and friendly. In a very busy touristic street so you might find it always crowded.

Nishin or herring soba is a Kyoto dish of picked/cured herring and soba noodles. This was invented at this very location. I want sure what to expect, but it was very tasty, kind of sweet and not too fishy. The restaurant is located on level 3. Service was fast, and at 2pm we could sit down straight away.

Oh wow! Read about this place on some food blog and this is definitely worth the visit. Had the herring soba and boy it was good. The soba is light and the broth is so refreshing. I thought the herring would be salty but it was flaky and sweet, down to the last bite. We took seats on the second floor by the window and it gave us a great view of the crowds. Comforting food and great view - this has got to be worth a visit!

Traditional three story soba restaurant that dates back quite a few generations. Very tasty soba that is well worth a wait. I came on New Years for the traditional soba and waited over an hour, but the mackeral soba was well worth it. The bottom floor has table and floor seating
