★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not many tourists come here so that is really a great thing. It is quiet, peaceful. Local people come here and they are so friendly.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful shrines (Yes, don't forget the smaller inari shrine to the East, within the same compound)!
Also, keep your eyes out for the white goose! Very funny guy.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely shrine! Quite small and easy to visit, it takes around 15 minutes to see the whole premises. Free admission.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The shrine is okay, nothing special. But there's a huge red tori (gate) in the street in front of it, which is kinda cool. Anyway, what really makes it a special shrine is the yearly Shitaya Jinja Matsuri - the shrine festival. Smaller than the one in Asakusa just a week later, but also much less crowded and even more old-school.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Just east of the Inaricho Subway Station on the south side of the street is 下谷神社 Shitaya jinja. The imposing vermillion torii is striking.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely shrine. Be sure to look all around. There are gates and minor shrines on the grounds that are beautiful. It is very nice to have this place of peace in the middle of all the high energy of Ueno.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The red gates captured my eye in what is a seemingly quiet street. This shrine is a place of peace and quiet and you’re expected to abide by these unwritten rules.
While I was there I watched people queue, some collecting plastic bags to put their shoes in. People stopped and paid their respects to statues of cats and foxes: they bow, clap their hands twice and pay their respects. There is a sign as you enter that gives you a brief history of the sharing which dates. Ask to 730.
I found this place just lovely but very much felt a stranger here - not by others but just because I stood out a lot.there is also one of those water ponds where you can give thanks and put scoops of water on your hands.
Wheelchair accessible and kid friendly but please pay your respects by being quiet and humble.
