Good old downtown public bathhouse that keeps on evolving! Seemingly a typical Showa-era sento but it has... the mezzanine locker room overlooking the bathroom, two roten open-air baths, a fully equipped sauna facility and benches probably converted from an ordinary garden area. With lots of kids running around and elders getting relaxed everywhere, this place is like a scene in a downtown manga story. Fun!

This place accepts all tattoos. They were few locals with full back and sleeve tats, so you'll be fine. What a great place! They had hot and cold baths both inside and outside, plus two saunas. You have to buy the desired service set from an automat. Staff will guide you with it. My set cost 710 yen (6,3$/5,6€) and it included bath, sauna and a towel set. Prepare a 100 yen coin for the locker in the dress room.

If you get sick of boiling hot and humid air in Summer or feel freezing in Winter, the bathing is the best reasonable solution. Kotobukiyu is a great sentou in Ueno. You can enjoy a variety of baths (JPY460) and saunas (+JPY200). No worries of towels(+JPY50), soap and toiletries(FREE).

I had my first onsen experience in this place yesterday and it was so amazing. It’s very local, actually I was the only tourist around, the staff will explain everything you need to know about it. I took the bath and sauna for about 730¥, it includes the towels and there’s soap and shampoo available. This place is tattoo friendly. Please consider that you’ll be completely naked. At first I thought it would be an issue but hell no! I felt very comfortable, some elderly ladies tried to talk to me and explain me things about the onsen, everybody was so lovely and friendly. If I’m in Tokyo again I’d definitely coming back.

Very nice sento conveniently located less than 5 minutes walk from Ueno station. Like other sento, it's divided into two similar areas, one for women and one for men. When you arrive, you put your shoes into locker boxes, then buy tickets at the machine depending on what you want. The machine is labelled in Japanese, but as this sento is foreigner-friendly, there's a sheet attached with English translation of each button. Tickets for adults are 470 yen, around 200 yen for kids. You can also rent towels and buy the optional access to the sauna (250 yen). Then you go to the changing room to get undressed (again, lockers are available to store your clothes - you will need a 100 yen coin deposit). And finally the bath area is yours, with showers, 2 indoor hot baths (one bubble bath with space for 4 people, one special changing bath for 4 to 6 people - when I went it was perfumed with watermelon juice), 1 outdoor hot bath (39°C, space for about 10 people) and 2 cold baths (19°C and 21°C). The whole place is very clean despite a slightly higher number of visitors (especially on men's side in the evening - I went on a Monday at 9:30pm) than in other sento or onsen that I visited. Like other sento, the lobby has refreshments for sale: drinks (soft and alcoholic), ice-creams...

TL;DR - affordable place, may need English translation for signages, must try for local experience of Japanese hot baths This place is a gender-segregated sento. Finding it wasn't a problem, as it was easily walkable from Inaricho Sta. A first-timer foreign tourist (like me) may get intimidated at first, since everything is in Japanese once you get inside. But the attendants are really helpful, just make sure you ask them what to do and what not to do inside. You can also observe the locals and do what they do. Mind you, this is a public bath frequented by locals, so there were many people inside (I went in at 5 PM, I think this is after office hours). Perhaps come in earlier (they open at 3:30 PM) or go in later so you can share the place with a fewer people. You can also check their website to see if the open-air baths will be available during your visit (it's worth trying, especially if you go to the cold bath after a few minutes in the sauna). In all places, make sure to follow their etiquette! In all, it was a good experience for me. Would have prefered it if they have English translation in their signages, though. Cost: ¥470 - sento only; ¥720 - sento+sauna+towel rental

My husband and I went to this sento twice while on our vacation to Japan. We both have tattoos and it wasn't a problem. The staff there don't speak english but it isn't a problem. They have english instructions on the machine where you order which package you want. They have a sauna which you pay a little extra to use. They also have a towel package you can rent for very little. We went both times in the late evening, around 10 pm. The first time was quiet, second time was much busier. The ladies outdoor bath was so relaxing! On the second visit, one of the bathers even struck conversation with me! Apparently there are men with full blown back tattoos that go which is quite interesting. There's also snacks and drinks available for purchase. Enjoy it as part of the Japanese experience when you visit as a relaxing end of your day!

Obviously I couldn’t take photos in a bathhouse, but they were very friendly and I only saw locals there. They have a little outdoor tub that is rock lined and beautiful, and then a good variety of tubs inside. Definitely the hottest water I’ve ever experienced, and Tattoo friendly
