平城天皇の大同二年（８０７）、大将軍坂上田村麻呂が東奥鎮撫の折この地を通過し、平野の中央に自生の麻が繁殖せるを感じ、一社を勧請し麻生神社と称す。
往古より氏子等が報賽として麻糸を奉納せり。その後、康平元年（１０５８）源義家が安倍の一党を追討の折にこの地に陣営し、当社に祈願す。神験の尊き霊社なり。後年に白山神社と改称す。
