本神社は、風土記にいう荒神社。勧請は何時か不詳。
文治年間（１１８５－１１９０）照井氏の所に勧請なりと、またいう、天正十八年（１５９０）出羽仙北の城主小野寺掃部頼武、関白秀吉の小田原に北条氏を攻むるや罪を得て領地を没収せられたり。為に頼武の一族郎党皆離散したるものの如し。
頼武建長五年（１６００）従者四、五人と共に当地胆沢郡旧目呂木村に来りて耕耘の身となりしが、その時氏神たりし八面荒神を祀って社殿を建立祭祀し今日に伝う。
