T	Tetsuo Kiyama on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 先日、浅草の六区街を通ると大正時代に大震災で崩壊するまで浅草凌雲閣が建っていた場所にあるパチンコ屋の建物にＯＫストアーが入ることが分かった。看板を見るとオープンは３月とのこと。浅草凌雲閣の煉瓦などの瓦礫は、昔々竜泉寺町にあった備中松山の初代藩主水谷勝隆の江戸下屋敷の池 (弁天池) の中に放り込まれたと聞いているが、その池があった場所には、現在かまぼこ型のモダンなビル「東京土建」の台東支部会館が建っている。まさかこの地がかつて凌雲閣の瓦礫を運んできた土方衆の館になったとはとても皮肉な巡り合わせだ！ The other day, when I passed through Asakusa's Rokuku-gai, I found that an OK store would be in the pachinko shop building where Asakusa Ryounkaku was built until it collapsed in the Taisho era. It's an ironic encounter that this place once became the mansion of the Hijikata people who carried the rubble of Ryounkaku!

Built in 1980, the 浅草十二階 (Asakusa jūnikai) [Asakusa twelve-stories], as it was also known, became a popular landmark until its destruction in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. The tower had the 1st electric elevators in Japan designed by 藤岡市助 (Fujioka Ichisuke), a founder of Toshiba. The three postcards I am including came from the Shitamachi Museum in nearby Ueno. The Edo-Tokyo Museum in Ryogoku has a large model of the tower in its permanent display. Also a photo exhibit of the damage caused by the 1923 earthquake. The museum also displays a miniature hibachi with an image of the tower on the side. The Shitamachi and Edo-Tokyo Museums are worth a visit! The tower was a landmark and featured in many ukiyo-e prints of the time.
