慶応３年（1867年）、馬車道の各商店が、店の前に柳と松の街路樹が植えたのが始まりです。
馬車道（中区）の並木は大正１２年（1923年）の関東大震災で焼失し、現在では昭和５２年（1977年）以降に植えられたアキニレに代わっています。
関内駅近くの馬車道広場には「近代街路樹発祥之地」の記念碑が建てられています。
Yokohama is said to be the birthplace of modern street trees in Japan.
It is the beginning of Keio 3 (1867) that various shops on the carriageway planted willow and pine street trees in front of the shops.
Namiki trees on the carriageway (Naka Ward) were burned down in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and are now replaced by Akiniré planted after 1977.
A monument of "Modern Street Tree Birthplace" is built on the Bashamichi Square near Kannai Station.
