平成26年（2014年）、建物の解体時に発掘されたこの遺構は、所有者の意向により、横浜関内地域の日本人商社建築の記録と、関東大震災の記憶を現在に伝える貴重な歴史的遺産として現地に保存されることになりました。
開通合名会社は、横浜港から陸上される貨物の通関・発送取扱事務を営んでいた商社であった。
大蔵省で税関貨物の取扱事務の経験を積んだ服部敢（はっとりかん）により、明治10年（1877年）1月に創立された「開通社」の社名を明治24年（1891年）「開通合名会社」に改名。
当地にあった社屋は、レンガと石を組み合わせた外壁を有し、屋根は瓦葺きで建物の両側にはうだつ（防火壁）を設えていた。
この遺構は左の写真の１階中央部分の出入口と右側の窓部分及び右側側面の壁の一部であると考えられる。
写真は明治38年（1905年）頃のものと推定されている。

関東大震災で倒壊してしまった建物の一部だが、これだけでも明治～大正の一幕を語ってくれているような気がする。
