I get it that Kaiseki is super trendy now. And this place has the location, atmosphere, and service all dialed in so it could be easy to be fooled. Presentation was stellar as well. But lets talk about the price, and the actual flavors of the food they serve. We paid approximately $15 per plate for 10 plates of food. Alcohol was extra. Flavor: overly light. Of the 10 dishes, none was extraordinary. 1 I would call very good. 3-4 good. The rest were blah to inedible. At this price point this is not OK. So if you want to be a poser or try to impress a girl with the atmosphere, by all means go here. If you like to eat good food, stay far away. Bland bland bland.

A very inhospitable and disappointing experience. My husband have been to several branches of Wakuden in the past and have had good service. However this last time we were left feeling that the level of hospitality has greatly declined. When we arrived we were told to wait while all the hall staff left. Not knowing when they would be back my husband went to the restroom. While he was gone the staff returned and showed me to my seat. Several minutes later I see my husband wandering around looking for me. No staff bothered to show him to his seat. We had the "omakase" course. Nothing about the course was explained so we didn't know what dishes or how many dishes we would receive. The timing between each dish seemed odd. We were left with just an empty bowl and spoon on our trays for about 20 minutes. We received a dish and while the server was explaining about it the head chef came over and rudely told him that it wasn't ours and took them away without any explanation or apologies to us. We were surprised when the same exact dish was served to us a second time and the chef took them away again. We were at a counter seat and all the other customers could see this happening. At another time when we were being served, another worker pushed in front of the man serving us and started digging around under counter. I have no complaint about the food, it was adequate. The service was deplorable especially considering the good reputation of this restaurant. My husband and I will not be returning.

We dined here tonight and I have to warn others about it. It was the most disappointing food experience we’ve had in Japan, and we have eaten very well before coming to Kyoto (Tokyo was incredible) To begin with, we were asked to decide on a menu (the 15000 or 2000 yen) upon booking the reservation, without any information about the meal. This isn’t that unusual here so we went with the more expensive option in the hopes it would be an unforgettable experience. Firstly we were seated in the corner of the half empty bench, with very limited view of the kitchen, even though I asked if we could sit where we had full view of the activities. The prime seats in the restaurants consistently went to the Japanese locals. We were not presented with menus or told what was coming. The courses we were served were Ok but definitely not amazing. Not what you would expect from this caliber restaurant. There were so few dishes I could have eaten a small burger on the way home. They gave us plane rice to go home with, which I would have appreciated w the actual meal. The couple next to us had every dish we were hoping to experience (including Unni, okonomyali style dish, plus a couple more) but we were never given the option. No one asked if we were full or wanted more (unlike all the other omakase/sushi restaurants previously) and THEN while we were still eating the past course and had half full glass of our wine they offered to call us a taxi. TWICE! I even said we are not finished and when we are we will ask for the bill. Overall so disappointing- both from food AND service perspective- I felt offended at their treatment of tourists. Clearly a big difference between how they look after locals and visitors. Don’t waste your money.

Incredible attention to detail. Not for foreigners who are not used to Japanese flavors. Chefs all were knowledgeable.

most authentic kaiseki di kyoto, reservation is needed, better do it through your hotel, fine food although some are too much with carbo, but sale collection is really nice. recommended place to have fine food in kyoto

Definitely an experience to remember! Careful preparation to the smallest details. The open kitchen is so clear even in Japanese standard. Showcases the best ingredients of the season. Fishes are cooked to perfection! Yes, cooked fishes, not just the raw ones.

An outstanding place in the middle of Kyoto. This restaurant presents the essence of high-end food in its real and simplest way - pure taste. If you use the very best produce available in the country, there is no need to destroy or over-blend its taste with spices. You will get a chance to taste the essence of each product they use. No matter if fish, meat or vegetable. Close your eyes, taste and enjoy. If you are looking for a big steak with lots of salt and pepper on top and topped with 300gram of processed cheese,... please go somewhere else. This is a sensational place for people who appreciate pure natural taste. We love this place and will be back every year we visit. 5 stars.

My mother took me to her favorite Kyokaiseki, Kyoto-style kaiseki, restaurant. Everything was wonderful. All the staffs were very kind and helpful. I’d recommend this restaurant 120%
