周辺は静かな住宅街で近隣の住人の憩いの場になっている。
歴史がある公園で園内には古くからある50ｍの屋外プールや弓道場もある。
かなり高低差がある公園で上に上ると山手西洋館のエリスマン邸とベーリック・ホールがある。
滑り台などはあるが遊具は多くないため、小さな子供が長時間遊ぶには不向きかもしれない。
春には桜の名所でもあるので西洋館巡りの途中に散策するのがおすすめ。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 外国人居留地ブラフ77番だったところ。公園は、元町商店街の裏手にありますが、山手地区では谷戸面にあたり、近くには山手外国人墓地があり、この一帯は、木陰に囲まれ、年間を通じて、静かで涼しく、とても気持ちがいい場所です。この地にきれいな水が湧いていることに着目、居留民として横浜に来たフランス人実業家のジェラールが横浜開国時に同地を取得し、この場所で水売り業を開業、フランス瓦を焼いたり、来航する外国船に飲料水を提供したり、外国人居留地へ送水をしたりしました。現在は同地の永代借地権を横浜市が取得し、公園として管理しており、当時のジェラールの施設の遺構である水屋敷は今でもきちんと保存されております。またここに塗装発祥の碑がありますが、日本には幕末まで漆や渋塗りの和式の技術はあったものの洋式のペンキ塗りの技術はなかったようで、幕府が開国時に外国人との談判所を急造するとき江戸の日本人塗装職人が外国人のペンキ塗りを真似て行ったのが初めで、それが横浜の地で行われたのが由来のようです。またこの地には大正期に浅野良三が創業、当時の人気作家であった谷崎潤一郎を文芸顧問とした大正活映という映画会社の映画撮影所がありました。
