昨今のマスコミも、孤児院は、使用せず児童養護施設と表記するようになりました。
ただし、一部報道機関が養護施設と表記する場合もあります。
それはそれとして、googleマップ等で、今でも孤児院と表現していることも事実です。
1887 年に石井十次により設立された岡山孤児院の孤児院と言う名称が後に採用された。
1932 年の救護法第6 条に孤児院と法令で定められた用語であった。
1946 年10 月1 日救護法は失効
1946 年10 月1 日から1948 年12 月31 日においては、法令で定められた名称はないことになる。
1947 年の児童福祉法の制定（1948 年施行）に伴い、孤児院という名称を養護施設に改称。
1997 年の児童福祉法の改正（1998 年施行）に伴い、名称を児童養護施設に改称。
英和・和英辞典等において、「孤児院」と表記されていたが、Google 翻訳では、「fosterhome」を「児童養護施設」と翻訳している。（本来はどちらかと言えば里親家庭のことである。）
「children's nursing home」や「children's home」を「児童養護施設」と訳すなど、昨今は、「孤児院」と言う表記も減少してきている。
