★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I usually don't go to large onsen hotels, but this out of the way place is truly sweet. Great facilities, warm atmosphere, attractive staff and all at a reasonable rate. Will be returning here again.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We are from Hong Kong. This Onsen hotel is the best one I have ever visited so far. They provide a very nice meals, onsen as well as nice and tidy room for us. The food was really great. Beside that, I would like to rate 100/100 for the foreign staff who helps us so much. He explained all the traditional Japanese onsen culture for us such as meals and room. Last but not least, we are 100% recommend it to you if you are looking for a onsen hotel near this area!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We very much enjoyed the hospitality and amenities at this Onsen Hotel. Almost all the guests were Japanese, but the management has hired Sabastian to assist non-Japanese guests for which we are greateful. Sabastian was very knowledgeable and assisted us in having smooth stay at the Choeikan Hotel.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I stayed for a night in March. The staff were extremely kind, helpful, and responsive. The area is very quiet in March. The rooms were nice and cozy, and the onsen excellent. My plan did not include meals so I can't comment on that.
They offer to drive customers to and from Shizukuishi Station, which was very helpful. If you cannot drive, make sure to contact them to sort that out. All in all I would recommend this charming ryokan for those that wish to take it easy and just relax for a day or two.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Choeikan is a fantastic onsen ryokan with great food, lovely surroundings, amazing service, and of course, really great hot springs water. If you're looking for a quintessential onsen ryokan experience which also happens to be a little more accessible to people not used to Japan, this is a great choice.
Why is Choeikan (also romanized Choueikan) so great? I'm not going to spoil all the surprises, since half the joy of these kinds of places are the little unexpected delights, but here are some:
-The food and drink are spectacular. And for those dealing with people who don't like eating fish for breakfast or picking bones out of fish or eating weird pungent sea creatures, it's far enough inland that the local specialties are not those things.
-The views, the natural hot springs water, the rooms, even the walk around town are all top notch, outdoorsey-but-relaxing. The rooms also handle 6' tall people easily.
-Sebastian has worked here for a number of years and is a fluent English speaker. This ensures that non-Japanese speakers will also have an easy time making arrangements and will have a great time while they're here.
-I was here in late November, which is very much in the off season. There weren't too many guests in the hotel, and as a result we had a lot of care and attention paid to us. That being said, the hotel is very spacious and I imagine even at full capacity wouldn't feel crowded.
-You can arrange with the hotel to be picked up from/dropped off at the Shizukuishi station (this seems fairly standard for ryokans). If you're coming from Tokyo, it's just one transfer at Morioka station, and the entire trip is covered by the JR pass.
It's good enough that even with all of the many onsen ryokans in the area, I would consider coming back on the once-per-ten-years trip I make to Japan.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The onsen here was nice. A slight onsen smell so a little acidic maybe. Hotel was clean and staff friendly. Dinner was nice, but no buffet breakfast unfortunately though (maybe because of COViD) just a kind of bento box thing.
